How to manage a 3D print library across several drives
A 3D print collection rarely lives in one place. There are files on your computer, a bigger set on an external drive, a share on a home server, and an old USB stick you keep meaning to sort. Each place has its own folders, its own naming habits and its own copies of things.
The usual advice is to put everything in one folder. That is hard to do, easy to get wrong, and not always possible when the files are large or live on a server. Here is how to keep a single view of everything without relocating it.
The problem with moving everything
Consolidating sounds tidy, but it has costs:
- It takes a long time, and you have to keep tracking what you have already moved.
- You can break links, such as slicer projects that point at files by path.
- You may not have room on one drive for the whole collection.
- Copies get left behind, so you end up with more duplicates, not fewer.
Index in place instead
A better idea is to leave the files where they are and keep a searchable index on top. The index knows what is in each folder and drive, so you can search across all of them at once.
ModelHaus does this. You add each folder where models live, on any drive, and it builds one library in place. It never moves, copies or changes the files. Its own data is kept in a separate folder on your computer.
Drives that come and go
Removable and network drives are the awkward part. They are not always connected, and many tools forget everything on them as soon as they disappear.
In ModelHaus, folders on network or removable drives stay in the library, greyed out, while the drive is offline. You can still search and browse them, and you can see what is on a drive that is sitting in a drawer. Local folders are picked up automatically when files change. Network and removable folders are rescanned when you open the app and whenever you ask it to, so the index catches up when the drive is back.
Keeping the library accurate
- Rescan after big changes. If you add a lot of files to a drive, rescan that source so the library knows.
- Use sources, not subfolders, for each drive. A separate source per drive makes it easy to filter by where something is.
- Check for duplicates now and then. Files copied between drives are the biggest source of waste. The duplicate finder guide shows how to see them.
Finding things by where they are
When you search, you can filter by source, so you can look only at the external drive or only at the server. Combined with tags and collections, which are kept in the index, you can group models across drives, such as a “Christmas” collection that includes files from three different places.
Backups are a separate job
An index helps you find files. It does not protect them. If a drive fails, the files on it are gone, so keep real backups of the drives that matter. ModelHaus will show you what lived on a drive, which can help you check a backup is complete, but it is not a backup tool.
